13: Chaco War

Description

This episode will focus on one of those conflicts, the conflict that is called the Chaco War which took place between 1932 and 1935 in South America between the nations of Bolivia and Paraguay. It gets its name from the Chaco region, which was disputed territory between the two belligerents. Over the three years of the conflict the top line numbers seem small when compared to the World Wars that are generally discussed on the show, with around 60,000 deaths for Bolivia and 36,000 for Paraguay. However, in terms of percentages that was roughly 2% of Bolivia’s and 3.5% of Paraguay’s population in 1932. That percentage is in line First World War numbers in terms of deaths as a percentage of population, very similar to the numbers for Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
